Read LessLearn specific techniques and master the three results YOU are looking for:
You want to paint trees that don't look like blobs, and to indicate branches and leaves without painting them all individually. You want beautiful skies without weird drying lines and areas of water that look real, with ripples and waves that don't look like they have been painted 'on top' of the water rather than being a part of it. You want to paint large areas of texture like beaches and grassy meadows, but aren't sure where to start. In this course you will learn how to paint trees and foliage, close up or far away, finally understand the water control techniques for skies of all types, and effortlessly create textured areas of space in your landscapes.
You want landscapes that look natural! Soft elements like shadows and clouds without hard edges, beaches that aren't too yellow and greens that aren't too bright. With a focus on greens, blues and neutrals you will no longer struggle with sand, pathways and stone. You will finally be able to mix a whole range of greens from muted and pale through vibrant to inky deep. Clever techniques will help you to paint waves on the beach (masking fluid is NOT the answer) and ripples on a river, with soft reflections lumpy or being overly detailed. You will gain confidence from knowing you have the techniques on hand to paint what you see and make it look real!
You want to easily add depth and perspective to a scene without a ton of math or time consuming methods. You want your viewers to think they are looking into a 3 dimensional landscape; a scene they would love to stroll into! With Michele as your guide you will learn about aerial perspective (which has nothing to do with angles of math), and the effect it is has on color, clarity and tone. Using the easy to understand strategies shared in the course to manipulate texture, size and detail depth will become automatic. Moving forwards your paintings will look like landscapes, not marks on a flat surface!
Grow your skills, grow your confidence! (Want to see the full Curriculum? Scroll down towards the bottom of this page!)
Are you are a complete beginner starting from scratch who wants to learn to paint landscapes? This course covers everything from materials to techniques to build knowledge and confidence - even with no prior experience!
Are you an intermediate artist who avoids landscapes, sticking to things like flowers and birds - jump in, this course will make expanding your repertoire simple!
Maybe you are an experienced artist who hasn't done a lot of watercolor. It's quite different to other mediums, lose the frustration and gain the control to get the results you want.
Perhaps you've taken my Basic Watercolor Techniques course but now want to get better at landscapes.
Perhaps you've taken my Complete Drawing course, or 9 Days of Sketching challenge and are now excited to move onto paintingil
Have you had a long break from art? Many people stop painting after school, college or even an unkind comment. Michele has helped hundreds of students re-discover art in later life!
Gain confidence in these 3 areas! (There's also a full curriculum lower down this page).
You want to start painting without worrying about getting the materials right or buying things you don't need. Even choosing the right paper can be daunting and time consuming... Learning to paint landscapes should be simple! There's no requirement with this course to buy tons of obscure equipment. Using just 10 basic colors and 5 basic brushes we can achieve anything. Have more colors? Or a favorite brush? No problem, go ahead and use them. This course guides you, it doesn't prescribe rigid rules. But it will give you the understanding of the tools of the trade so you can progress with confidence. Paint, brushes, paper and preparation - everything is covered.
You love color and want simple solutions and easy mixes. The sheer number of paint colors available to buy is not only amazing but also confusing. We start the course with an in-depth look at blues, greens and neutrals. No more luminous, unnatural green trees or banana colored beaches as we learn together to create a huge range of nuanced shades from a small amount of colors. From pale sand to natural fresh greens, from stormy clouds to the way the sea overlaps the beach, we will learn mixing and correcting. Because getting the color right is half the battle. With the knowledge and the swatches you make in this course you will feel confident in choosing and mixing the colors you want. No more guesswork!
You love the effects that can be achieved with watercolor and want to be able to control your results. Watercolors are unique, and you need a course specific to them. Brush marks cannot be relied upon in the way they can with acrylics or oils. Learn with Michele as she takes you through clever tricks and tips that will have you creating astonishing realism with ease. From breaking waves to grasses to cloud shadows, these things will become easy as we learn, practice and build on simple techniques. The simplest technique can achieve game-changing results, and this course is packed with them!

Here's everything you get!
In Module 1 I will give you materials advice, tell you what I'm going to be demonstrating with, and show you how to prepare your painting surface with an eye on economy and success!
In Module 2 I will cover the three main areas of color you need to mix for landscapes. These are Blues for water and sky, Greens for foliage and those tricky Neutrals for earth and rocks. From mixing natural greens, choosing the exact right blue and mixing subtle greys and browns, color mixing for landscapes is demystified!
In Module 3 I will teach you the three main ways to create skies. Starting with simple graduated washes, through cloudy skies and onto complex skies like sunsets. A sky is usually the place you start a landscape, AND the secret to its success!
In Module 4 I will discuss various types of water in the landscape, from still to moving, and look at easy strategies for getting realism, something many watercolorists struggle with! I will show you the alternatives to masking fluid that look far more natural so you never get unnatural looking water again.
In Module 5 We will look at techniques for making textured areas of rock, beach and paths - putting the land into your landscapes. These flat but textured areas can be hard to approach, but some simple tips will stop these areas looking flat and boring.
In Module 6 We will look at the things that grow in the landscape; from grassy meadows to large shrubs, trees, and everything in between. You will learn how to subtly hint at detail without a tiny brush and painting every leaf.
You also get these BONUS Materials!

If you already have watercolor paper, paints and brushes you may not need to buy much initially. I will not be insisting you have exact materials and brands. However, there will be a video and downloadable PDF with tons of advice and suggested materials so you can choose what to buy if you don’t have anything. As we go through the videos a few other things are used including masking fluid, gum arabic, salt, paper towel and one or two watercolor pencils and oil pastels. You do not need full sets of these, nor are they vital to your understanding of techniques.
